Top 10 Tips when Choosing a Cosmetic Dentist

blog_nov2

Deciding on a cosmetic dentist is your first and possibly most important step in getting the wonderful smile you’ve always wanted. 96% of Americans feel an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to a member of the opposite sex, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. With every dentist out there claiming that they perform cosmetic dentistry, it’s difficult to determine who is right for you. Here are some things to think about when choosing your “cosmetic” dentist.

1. SPECIALTY / EXPERTISE
     – Look for a dentist who specializes in cosmetic dentistry in their practice. Obviously, the more cases a dentist has done, the more likely he or she will deliver excellent results for you.

2. SMILE MAKEOVERS /  BEFORE & AFTER GALLERY
     – Photos are crucial. Make sure that the dentist you are considering has a lot of photography of their work. Before and after pictures are essential for evaluating the level of performance you can expect from that dentists’ work. Here is an example of a Smile Makeover Gallery

3. EDUCATION
     –  Scant amounts of cosmetic dentistry are actually taught by dental schools. Make sure to ask for and view post-graduate credentials when selecting your cosmetic dentist. Have they obtained credentials through post-graduate institutions? Which ones? Find out and research those institutions if possible.  What membership affiliations do they have? What is the focus of their continuing education?

4. TESTIMONIALS
     – Testimonials on a website are great, but it’s even better to have patients you could call and discuss their dental experience. Other patients can sometimes give you a better idea of what to expect before, during and after treatment. The dentist should be proud to give you a list of his “raving fans” to call.

5. FACILITIES / TECHNOLOGY / OVERALL CUSTOMER SERVICE
     – Have a look around the office. This is your opportunity to see the equipment, ask questions about available technology and procedures, and check out the sterilization areas. This is also your opportunity to assess the environment, and the people who will be working with you. While hygiene obviously comes first, it’s all the better if the environment is pleasant and relaxing, and the staff are calm and cheerful as well.

6. COMFORT & CONVENIENCE
     – It is important that you get a sense of honesty and be able to have a frank and candid conversation with your cosmetic dentist. You will be spending some time with the dentist you choose, so you need to feel very comfortable with and confident in them.

7. SPECIALIZED DENTAL TEAM:
     – If you are seeking the best cosmetic dentistry possible, make sure your dentist has an experienced master ceramist and anesthesiologist for dental implant procedures. The level of training of these people is equally as important as that of the cosmetic dentist. They will work as a team to create the smile you’ve been dreaming of.

8. PAYMENT / TREATMENT PLANS
     – You should expect to see and hear of a variety of options when consulting with a cosmetic dentist. During that consultation a dentist may explain or propose to you their “ideal” treatment and then suggest a variety of other possible options. Options are important because ultimately you know yourself best, and are responsible for your own decisions. Information should be provided about fees and payment plans before treatment is scheduled.

9. POST OPERATIVE CARE
     – Make sure that there are special arrangements made for handling post operative care and/or emergencies outside of office hours. Most dentists make arrangements with a colleague or emergency referral service if they are unable to tend to emergencies.

10.  ACCREDITED BY THE ADA
     – All ADA member dentists voluntarily agree to abide by the high ethical standards reflected in the ADA Principles of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct as a condition of their membership.

Permanent Fixed Lingual Retention (PFLR)

Invisible Wire Retainer or Fixed Lingual Wire

Once braces are removed, we bond a lingual wire/s to the inside of the front teeth to hold these teeth in place as we know your front teeth have a potential to relapse (go back to the way they were before treatment).
THE WIRE MUST STAY IN PLACE FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE FOR YOUR FRONT TEETH TO REMAIN STRAIGHT!
Once the wire/s are fitted, you may find that your tongue will play with the wire and that your speech is affected, however, these feelings will recede after a short period of time.

If you are fitted with a PFLR, you will need to:

  1. Eat normally, use your teeth normally, do not tear at crunchy foods or crunch ice-cubes, etc. with your teeth.
  2. Keep the wire/s clean by using a toothbrush and dental floss.
  3. Attend regular dental reviews and have recommended treatments as required by your dentist (usually every 6 or 12 months).

Top 5 reasons why you should use your insurance benefits to the fullest!

Your dental insurance… USE IT OR LOSE IT! flex_idanewsletter_1020

1. Yearly Maximums. Dental insurance plans put a maximum on the amount of money they’re willing to pay for your dental care. Maximums vary from one company or policy to the next, but typically fall around $1000. Sounds like a lot of money, doesn’t it? Insurance companies consider this amount to be a good investment. Allowing you to get regular dental care, your carrier can prevent the need for more serious (and more expensive) dental procedures down the road. Why not do you both a favor and use it, ensuring your mouth is in tip-top shape when next year rolls around?

2. Premiums. You’re probably paying a monthly premium to keep your insurance. Even if you don’t need extensive treatment, you should use that money for regular check ups and cleanings to prevent costly procedures in the future. Don’t throw your money away!

3. Deductibles. Insurance companies typically expect you to pay a certain amount of money for your dental care each year – usually about $500. If your smile isn’t in good shape, our office can create a treatment plan to put you back on track. Deductibles begin anew each year, so spreading out this care over more than 1 year will mean you have to pay more out-of-pocket.

4. Inflation. It seems everything becomes more expensive from one year to the next, and dental materials and equipment are no exception. Putting off necessary dental care could mean that you’ll have to pay more down the road.

5. Dental Problems Escalate. If your pearly whites are anything but, they’re only going to get worse. That is, of course, unless you take advantage of your insurance benefits so you can tend to your teeth and gums. A little cavity that isn’t bothering you one year may become a major headache (or toothache!) the next.

Finish 2009 and start the New Year Right! By scheduling an appointment for some maintenance care or corrective treatments / procedures on your teeth! Pannu Dental Clinics can help you work out a treatment plan which will be accommodated in the timeframe of what’s left for the year to report your FSA expenses. This will also help you estimate your contribution to the plan for next year, too!

Dr. Nguyen discusses treatment for Baby Caries (Infant Tooth Decay)

Before DS Cupertino

Before DS Cupertino

Dr. Andrew Nguyen discusses tooth decay in infants and children more commonly known as baby bottle tooth decay. It can destroy the teeth and most often occurs in the upper front teeth. But other teeth may also be affected. Decay occurs when sweetened liquids are given and are left clinging to an infant’s teeth for long periods. Many sweet liquids cause problems, including milk, formula and fruit juice. Bacteria in the mouth use these sugars as food. They then produce acids that attack the teeth. Each time your child drinks these liquids, acids attack for 20 minutes or longer. After many attacks, the teeth can decay. Watch how

Combo treatments: Crowns, Caps and Invisalign (Is it possible?)

Hi Dr. Pannu!

I had a crown done a few years ago that aesthetically helped the appearance and strength of my teeth. However, I still have some problems with crowding and although I know that even if the artificial tooth is cemented properly, I want to know if Invisalign will dislodge the tooth. Can you please enlighten me more about this?

- Kaye C. (Fremont, CA)

Hi Kaye,

Invisalign / Braces will not affect any crown or root canal treatment. Please see link of our before and after patient here

We accept HSA/FSA

A health savings account (HSA), is a tax-advantaged medical savings account available to taxpayers in the United States who are enrolled in a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). The funds contributed to the account are not subject to federal income tax at the time of deposit. Unlike a flexible spending account (FSA), funds roll over and accumulate year over year if not spent. HSAs are owned by the individual, which differentiates them from the company-owned Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) that is an alternate tax-deductible source of funds paired with HDHPs. Funds may be used to pay for qualified medical expenses at any time without federal tax liability. Withdrawals for non-medical expenses are treated very similarly to those in an IRA in that they may provide tax advantages if taken after retirement age, and they incur penalties if taken earlier. These accounts are a component of consumer driven health care.

Proponents of HSAs believe that they are an important reform that will help reduce the growth of health care costs and increase the efficiency of the health care system. According to proponents, HSAs encourage saving for future health care expenses, allow the patient to receive needed care without a gate keeper to determine what benefits are allowed and make consumers more responsible for their own health care choices through the required High-Deductible Health Plan.

A flexible spending arrangement (FSA), or Flexible Spending Account, as they are commonly called, is one of a number of tax-advantaged financial accounts that can be set up through a cafeteria plan of an employer in the United States. An FSA allows an employee to set aside a portion of his or her earnings to pay for qualified expenses as established in the cafeteria plan, most commonly for medical expenses but often for dependent care or other expenses. Money deducted from an employee’s pay into an FSA is not subject to payroll taxes, resulting in a substantial payroll tax savings.

The most common FSA, the medical expense FSA (also medical FSA or health FSA), is similar to a health savings account (HSA) or a health reimbursement account (HRA). However, while HSAs and HRAs are almost exclusively used as components of a consumer driven health care plan, medical FSAs are commonly offered with more traditional health plans as well. An FSA may be utilized by paper claims or an FSA debit card also known as a Flexcard.

William Shatner, Sarah Palin & Dr. Dalvir Pannu

I was watching The Late Night show with Conan O’Brien the other night and was immensely entertained with William Shatner’s poetic take-off on Sarah Palin’s speech. I had been an avid follower of “Captain Kirk’s” voyages since I was a kid and have a great admiration for this guy who was able to evolve as an actor through the years. And although Shatner’s career hasn’t always been that hot & suffered typecasting badly after Star Trek and his one attempt at a TV Cop series, he really reinvented himself with Boston Legal. So naturally, being interviewed by his team at the “Heartbeat of America” show was not just a pleasure but an honor as well. The experience was so surreal that I felt I had gone where no man had gone before! Check out the video clips below;

If the aligners don’t fit…

Dr, Pannu,

I tried to put in my second upper Invisalign tray tonight and I can’t get it in.  I’m starting to wonder if there’s something not right with the aligner itself. I am going to leave my first one in over night. Please let me know what to do when you get a chance.
Thank you!
C from Fremont
P.S. I’m not having problems with the bottom aligners. They fit fine.

invisalign

Dear C,

Due to your severe crowding, this is expected every time you change the upper aligners for the first few months. Manufacturing defects are extremely rare in Invisalign aligners.

I recommend using a mirror to guide you in the insertion of your aligners since there’s a great chance that you may be pressing the back portion of the aligners in the wrong areas.

Try to insert from different possible angles by putting it in the front teeth (anteriors) first. Look in the mirror if the back edge of the aligner is dangling towards the palate or the cheeks, and then push the back part of the aligner towards the proper seating.

If that doesn’t work still, insert the left back first, and keep on pressing it towards the anterior (front teeth), making the full arch of the aligner seat onto the full arch of the teeth… If that doesn’t work, do the opposite and start from the right back part.

Different arches have different angles for easy insertion/removal. Hence this process is not the same for all the patients. But believe me; it gets really easy after you get the hang of doing it.

If you have tried everything possible but still have difficulties then please come to the office and I shall help you put it on. After using some series of aligners, this process will become a piece of cake for you.

Can I shorten the time frame of my Invisalign use?

Asked by VRK from Fremont, California

“Hello Dr. Pannu! I am currently on my 2nd set of Invisalign aligners.  I feel tight only on the 1st day or so after I start using a new set, and after that, I don’t feel a lot of pull.  I am wondering if instead of wearing each set for 2 weeks, if I can change sets every 10 days or so.  That could make the total treatment period much shorter.  Would that be a good idea?  Please let me know. Thanks!”

 Dr. Pannu:

“It’s common to feel more tightness for the first two/three days whenever a person starts on the new aligners. However you can’t decrease the total time frame per aligner. Even though you don’t feel the pressure after few days of wear, it doesn’t mean that it is not working. You need to give proper time for the root to move as well along with the crown portion of the tooth.”

How to get rid of yellow teeth in kids?

Here is the close up picture of Jasmine’s smile, a wonderful patient in San Jose Office of Pannu Dental Care. She has mixed dentition (front two middle teeth are permanent and more yellow as compared to other baby teeth).

The enamel of permanent teeth is more yellowish in color as compared to baby (primary) teeth. So whenever the permanent teeth are present along with few other baby(primary) teeth, the permanent teeth appears to be contrasting yellow. Nothing to worry, it’s just a normal condition. The baby teeth enamel is whiter than the new permanent teeth.

If you think your teeth aren’t white enough, though, talk to your dentist before you try any over-the-counter whitening products. Your dentist may be able to offer you professional treatment, which will be suited to your unique needs and will work better than over-the-counter products.Be careful when buying over-the-counter whitening products. Some bleaching agents may damage your gums and mouth. So always follow the instructions on any whitening product you use.
